no, not the powdery psychedelic inducing substance from south america. but the equally deadly carcinogenic beverage. there are only two countries that coca-cola are not sold. here in cuba and north-korea. no wonder they were labelled as the axis of evil. with rum aplenty, i wasn’t missing the canned caramel fizzy too much anyway.
máquina or yank tanks are the classic cars or vehicles that is ubiquitous with cuba - from the american 50’s fords, chevrolets & dodges and russian ladas, moskvitchs & volgas. these antique vehicles added charm to cuba. anyone visiting cuba is immediately transported back in time.

we made a side trip to a nearby town near viñales. while waiting for our driver, we were invited into the house of this lady. bless her soul. she seemed to live alone and must be lonely to want to invite us in.
she showed her sparsely decorated house before sitting me down and showed me old photos of her wedding and her children. when i asked where her husband was, she gestured that he was no more. when i pointed to her children, she gestured they lived far away. she also showed me her list of medication she was on.
i wished i could understand her story. perhaps she needed help. perhaps she just wanted company.
dr. luis is a dentist we met in trinidad. he is a friend of the host we were staying with. he invited us over to his home and showed us around. i made a portrait of him and promised to send him a copy of the photograph. i lost the address he wrote for me.
if by some chance, someone who is reading this know dr. luis, please drop me a message.
no trip to cuba is complete without visiting one of the most famous nighttime promenades in the world.
