"股割り - 相撲の涙"

there's pain. and there is 股割り pain.

“股割り - 相撲の涙“ : literally, “loin splits - tears of a sumo”.

sumos always conjure funny, often rude thoughts. men with moobs. overweight ballerinas with nappies.

i walk in here and thought to myself “alright alright. the skinny guy is in da’house. this is what a size 36 waist looks like.”

after a recent visit to a beya helmed by former yokozuna hokutoumi, i left with nothing but respect, awe and some fear about these athletes. it is f*king hard-work to be a sumo. it is literally, all sweat, blood and tears.

all four hours of it.

every single day.

try doing a split. or full burpees for 5 minutes straight. try letting other grown men push and slap your body. try doing that split again and lean forward, and not cry.

i wonder what okinoumi ayumi, the current sekiwake at this beya, went through to earn his title. it has to be many many loin splits. i cringe even counting.
